Called "the dean of Canadian science fiction" by The Ottawa Citizen and "just about the best science-fiction writer out there" by the Denver Rocky Mountain News, Rob has spoken repeatedly at the Library of Congress, the Googleplex, various NASA facilities, and multiple TEDx events. The ABC TV series FlashForward was based on his Aurora Award-winning novel of the same name.

Rob has won 55 national and international awards for his fiction, including the Hugo and Nebula Awards for Best Novel of the Year, a lifetime achievement Aurora Award from the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Association, the top SF awards in China, Japan, France, and Spain, and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal from the Governor General of Canada.
